GILGIT: The objective of the eight-member team of Karakoram National Movement to cross the Shunter Top and visit various districts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir was to draw attention towards the closure of the old and historical routes of Gilgit-Baltistan. These routes include the Shunter Top to Keel, Muzaffarabad-Astore, Sri Nagar-Skardu-Kargil and Khaplu-Ladakh, etc.
This was stated by KNM Chairman Iqbal Advocate while addressing a press conference here after returning from the visit.
He said the visit also aimed to show that the 20 million people of Gilgit-Baltistan have their own identity but some elements of Kashmir consider this region as their jugular vein. These political elements have their own vested interests. He said we want to take our struggle ahead by exposing the designs of all such elements.
He said since its establishment the KNM has been working for promoting the identity of Gilgit-Baltistan and now all nationalist political parties of the region have recognized the separate identity of the people of the region.
He said the issue of Kashmir and that of Gilgit-Baltistan were linked with each other and the rulers of Pakistan have failed to separate them from each other.
We are struggling for the cause of Kashmir along side the Kashmiri leaders at the international level and at the same time we have the right to keep our own separate identity. He said the Ksashmiri leadership had also accepted our stance on the issue.
He said for the last over 60 years the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have been suffering untold miseries as the government has denied our due rights and its secret agencies have been meddling in the affairs of the region. He said the people are no more ready to undergo such types of sufferings.
He said the recent statement of the federal minister for Northern Areas and Kashmir Affairs has exposed the real intentions of the rulers towards Gilgit-Baltistan and we would never expect anything positive from the rulers.
