GILGIT: Adviser Finance and Planning Mirza Hussain has said as long as the Ministry of Kashmir and Northern Areas released funds for Gilgit-Baltistan in installments like giving someone alms, development projects in the region would not be completed on time.
In a statement, he said the NAPWD awards uplift projects to the contractors and asks them to start work but soon it runs out of the meager funds which not only affects the pace of work on the schemes but also puts its impacts of the contractors. Because of non-completion of the projects on time, their cost also continues rising, he added.
He said this time too, the government has released only Rs130 million out of the Rs6 million allocated for the region. He said due to this policy of the ministry work on two vital bridges in Gilgit-Baltistan has been badly affected. The collapse of the bridge in Danyor has further compounded the situation, he added. He said according to the agreements, work on the two bridges was to complete in the year 2006 but due to delay in release of funds the projects were in the doldrums.—Our Correspondent
