Steps urged to protect environment

GILGIT: Federal Minister for Environment Hamidullah Jan Afridi has said Northern Areas’ glaciers, second biggest in the world, were faced with extinction within the next 40 years due to worldwide environmental changes.These changes would also reduce the number of glaciers on the Rakaposhi, he added.He said if timely steps were not taken, the Northern Areas’ environment would face irreparable loss very soon.Speaking at a press conference at the end of his visit to Gilgit-Baltistan, the minister said the government was launching a Rs22 billion project to safeguard environment in the four provinces and Northern Areas.Besides, efforts are also being made to increase the coverage of the country’s forest by at least one per cent.He said work would also be started soon to convert solid waste into fertilizer.He said the forest policy had failed to deliver and the new policy would be formulated after consultation with the stakeholders. The stakeholders in Northern Areas would also be consulted in this regard, he added.
