CHITRAL: Work is in full swing on the Lowari rail tunnel project and out of 8.3 kms long tunnel, 6.5 kms was completed last week, a highly placed source in the project told this scribe here on Wednesday. The source said that the remaining work of tunneling will be completed by early November if no soft rock or seepage of work cropped up in the tunnel way. He said that in the second phase of the project, the laying of rails inside the tunnel will be started and the tunnel will be opened for general public by November 2010. The source said that on the Chitral side, another tunnel of two kms length will be constructed to provide an all-weather access to the rail tunnel which is situated at high altitude and the road remains blocked during snowfall in the winter and torrential rains and floods in the summer. He said that work on the second tunnel will also be a part of the second phase. The source said that access road of 30 kms length on either side of the tunnel is being constructed whose quality is nothing short of international standards.
