Bid to take over copper reserves stoke tension

Gindai: Tension prevails among the people of this area after discovery of copper reserves in Gindai Barkhai nullah and a bid by some families to take control of the resources. At present, a number of companies are eying to explore the reserves and many company officials have reached the area and are staying in hotels. People of the area said some members of the Northern Areas Legislative Assembly while considered the reserves as their ancestral property were trying to contract it out to their favourite people. However, when contacted, the members refuted the allegations and said rumours about the matter were being spread among the people. It may be recalled that the people of the area have been holding consultative meetings with the deputy commissioner of Ghizer and assistant commissioner of Gupis Yasin over the matter, while officials of the Paki-China Friendship Association including two Chinese nationals have been staying in the local guest house for this purpose. The SP of Ghizer has also deployed police force for the security of the company officials and to maintain law and order in the area. The area people said they would not allow the so-called company to start work in the area, as the officials of the company were holding secret talks with the member of NALA and seven families without taking the public into confidence. They alleged that it was a conspiracy to divide the people and take control of the area resources. They said they would enter enter into an agreement with any company that promised to give 50 per cent royalty to the area people. However, the Pak-China company would never be allowed to even move to the site, they added. It may be mentioned that 28 types of minerals have also been discovered at the same site.
