Call to ensure basic rights

By Shezad Hussain GILGIT: The region of Gilgit-Balitistan has been denied its basic constitutional and human rights for the last over six decades. Ironically, no government ever tried to ascertain the ground realities and issues of public concerns and except deprivation, unemployment and poverty gave nothing to the over 20 million people of the region. These views were expressed by Sher Zaman, former president of the Karakoram National Movement Gilgit chapter, while talking to Bang-e-Sahar. He said after formation of the PPP-led government, people of the region were looking towards Islamabad as a last ray of hope for resolution of their long-standing issues. He said since independence the successive governments tried to downplay the identity and strategic importance of the region by sometimes trying to declare the area as part of Kashmir
