ISLAMABAD: The constitutional issues relating to the Northern Areas will be resolved under the spirit of Charter of Democracy and people of the region would be given their basic rights. This was stated by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) central leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi while talking to a party delegation from Gilgit-Baltistan who called on him in Islamabad. Mr Hashmi said the development of the strategically important region was crucial for the progress and welfare of the country as a whole. He said the new government would make all-out efforts to bring the region at par with other developed areas of the country. The delegation led by PML-N Northern Areas chapter president Hafiz Hafizur Rehman comprised vice-president Ghandal Shah, joint secretary Ashraf Sada, Diamer district president Abdul Wahid, vice-president Hidayatullah and Sher Jehan. Mr Hashmir paid tributes to the services of the party leaders, activists and workers in the Northern Areas and said dedicated workers would be given their due place in the party. He said problems faced by the area people would be resolved on a priority basis. The delegation briefed the PML-N leader about issues concerning the area. Mr Hafizur Rehman told Mr Hashmi that the people of Northern Areas have always rendered invaluable sacrifices for the progress and stability of the country but in return dictatorial rulers in Islamabad gave them lawlessness, poverty, unemployment and law and order issues. He said if the constitutional issue of the region was resolved under the spirit of the Charter of Democracy, the longstanding demand of the people would be fulfilled. The PML-N delegation also apprised Mr Hashmi of the public reservations on the Diamer Dam issue and said local people particularly those of Diamer should be taken into confidence regarding royalty of the dam, rehabilitation of the affected people, compensation for land and resolution of disputes with the NWFP.
